Volunteer with Soar on the Shore Kite Festival - Sara O

At the Kite Festival, where do you volunteer?
For the first three kite festivals, we gave kite kits to the first 100 kids and helped the kids assemble their kites.  In subsequent years, Sara has been assisting the CTI sponsored kids craft area with their art projects.

Describe what it means to be a volunteer at the event.
I love seeing families in awe of our beautiful beach, boardwalk, and the wonderful display of kites during the festival.

What is your favorite part of the Kite Festival?
When the winds are just right, and the big kites are launched … it is truly an incredible site.

Have you or your family ever flown a kite?
Yes, in the winter when the Bay freezes over, our family likes to fly kites at the cottage.  My grandkids and several neighbors have their own little ‘winter kite festival’.  When you are on the frozen Bay, you don’t have to worry about trees, power lines, or losing a kite in the water.  We always have a lot of fun! 

Do you feel that the Kite Festival is an important event for the Algoma area?
Yes, it is important for Algoma as it draws people who may never have been to our city.  They see how beautiful Algoma is, tell their friends, and many plan return visits.

How would you describe ‘Soar on the Shore’ in three words or phrases?
Incredible … awesome … family-oriented
